Today marks the commencement of the Sex Work Decriminalistion Act (2022) that was passed into law in February this year. This latest informatioon from the Victorian government makes clear why any other model never stood a chance and that the only narrative permitted is around stigma.
"In November 2019, the Victorian Government asked Fiona Patten MP to lead a review to make recommendations to the Minister for Consumer Affairs Victoria on decriminalising sex work in Victoria.
After carefully considering the review, the government decided to decriminalise sex work in Victoria."
Two points here - Fiona Patten has a very long history of promoting and benefitting from the sex industry and the review referred to was never made public, not evenn to most MPs. www.vic.gov.au/review-make-recommendations-decriminalisation-sex-work

"One of the most achievable solutions in preventing sex trafficking is to end the impunity for those who create the demand for the commercial sex market in the first place. Accountability must not be limited to the traffickers and profiteers of the sex trade; it must extend to the sex buyers themselves." Taina Bien-Aimé writes in this article about sex trafficking of desperate women and girls from the Ukraine. womensenews.org/2022/04/women-as-weapons-of-war-a-spectrum-of-sexual-violence-in-ukraine-and-beyo... ... How TikTok enables 'sugar daddies' to exploit young girls.
"A Forbes review of hundreds of recent TikTok livestreams reveals how viewers regularly use the comments to urge young girls to perform acts that appear to toe the line of child pornography — rewarding those who oblige with TikTok gifts, which can be redeemed for money ... It’s the digital equivalent of going down the street to a strip club filled with 15-year-olds.” www.forbes.com/sites/alexandralevine/2022/04/27/how-tiktok-live-became-a-strip-club-filled-with-1...

So important to listen to the stories of survivorsJoin Sally Breen and Simone Watson as they launch Body Shell Girl by Rose Hunter.

Body Shell Girl is a memoir in verse about the first two years of a decade that Rose Hunter spent in the sex industry in Canada. When Rose walked into a massage parlour in Toronto in 1997, she was looking for a temporary fix to pay rent and avoid having to go back to her home country of Australia.

Awkward, shy and looking for a place to belong, she found herself in a strange world she understood little about, other than here she could make more than rent. She planned to use her earnings to buy herself an education that would secure the career of her dreams.

Naively believing she could do only what was required of her, without trauma or side effects and leave the industry on her own terms, she was shattered by what unfolded.

This is her story. It is also a searing portrayal of this dehumanising industry in all its destructive power.
